This weekend my school had a level test. On Saturdays I take 2 krav maga classes and then stay for the bag class. Working out on the heavy bag is great for correcting your form, strengthening your core and improving your striking ability. Due to the test they canceled the other classes. I needed to work out with a bag and figured I'd check out L.A Boxing to workout on the heavy bag. Or so I thought. I went to the 11:00 kickboxing class. I gotta say it was a helluva workout. However I will NOT be back. The instructor spent way too much time on the warmup. By the time we got to the bags the time spent wasn't productive as we were all burnt out. I like how the gym is setup and they have plenty of punching bags to work on. Do I think you can learn self defense there?? Not from what I saw. It's more like Tae Bo. I saw some of the shittiest form ever and there wasn't much correction. If you go there a few times a week your stamina will improve.

Arnis is THE shit!
Since I like to train at least 4 times a week, I've been looking for an alternative on Thursdays. My km class is at 6pm and there's no way I can make it out there in time. Rush hour traffic in the DC metro area is a bitch, to put it mildly. Anyway, I've been debating between training with Otis out in Gaithersburg or taking an Arnis class. This past week I went to take arnis and I was impressed. Like krav maga, it's reality based and the techniques are simple to pick up. Once you get them down you can add speed and explosiveness. It complements what I'm doing in Krav Maga perfectly. Here's the instructor in action:
KM Knife Defenses Seminar
There's a seminar coming up this saturday on knife defenses. To say I'm excited about it is putting it mildly. The last one I attended was taught by Otis Berry a krav maga black belt and certified badass. He teaches at www.jeffgordonmma.com
The instructors for this next seminar are Jeanine Jackson and Jeff Mount. I've seen some videos of Jeff Mount in action and he's a beast. Jeanine is in the book Complete Krav Maga and she's trained under US Chief Instructor Darren Levine. They're both instructors in Columbia at www.kravmd.com
Time permitting I'll shoot some video. I definitely plan on taking some pics for this one. Stay tuned.......

The Versatility of Krav Maga
Krav Maga is also a versatile system. It deals with everything from empty hand fighting, to knife and gun disarms. There are even techniques to deal with shotguns and M16s. Here's a demonstration of a simple knife disarm.
Krav Maga is VERY Effective
The purpose of this blog is to provide techniques and insights into reality based self defense systems that work in the real world. To work they need to be simple, easily learned and they must be able to be used quickly. Enter our first contestant krav maga. The undisputed king of reality based self defense. Used by the Israeli Army krav maga has been put to the test on the battlefield.
Here's an example of the elegance and simplicity of krav maga.
